What it Does/How it Works:

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid with antioxidant capabilities which has generally been used in the treatment of allergies as well as to promote enhanced cardiovascular health.

Researchers set out to identify cellular factors that allowed the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) to replicate. They found two different heat shock proteins: HSP 40 & 70. They further worked out that quercetin inhibits the synthesis of these proteins, and in the test tube blocks viral reproduction effectively. (These researchers, led by Samuel French, will launch Phase 1 clinical studies with Hepatitis C patients with genotype 1.)

Cellular proteins cannot mutate like viral proteins, making viral resistance to quercetin unlikely.
